Welcome to the Ozark Natural Science Center Field School, our newest offering of exciting programs. Field School courses have been developed to meet the varied outdoor interests of adult learners. Whether you are just becoming interested in learning about our natural environment or are already an Ozark nature whiz, the ONSC Field School is the perfect place to learn, share knowledge and meet like-minded enthusiasts.  Venture out and join in on one or more of the Field School courses it’s sure to be a great time!

Important Note to Teachers: Field School courses may qualify for ADoE professional development credit hours.

Field School age requirement is 21 or older ~ unless otherwise noted

 

Birds, Bugs and Blooms - April 15, 2017 - $15 per person   

Calling all Ornithologists, Entomologists and Botanists also known as Birders, Buggers, and Bloomers!  Spring is busting out in Bear Hollow and we want you to come enjoy, explore and discover the awakening of the season with us. Learn and share your knowledge with others and the ONSC staff as we hike Bear Hollow trails in search of the three “B’s”. Grab your field guides and binoculars and join us for this celebration of spring.

Drawing on Nature - April 27-28, 2017 - $268 per person   

Get out the sketchpad, sharpen those pencils, open your eyes and imaginations.  We are hitting the trail for some nature doodling and naturalist journaling.  Nationally known artist and author Susan Morrison will be our guide for this intro into nature drawing.  No experience necessary, just a desire to put your observation skills together with a bit of creative art.

Primitive Skills:  Fire and Flint - May 20, 2017 - $15 per person   

Mix together equal parts of geology, history, skill and art and you have the recipe for flint tool making. Make and take flint points, blade or scraper.  This day of primitive skills also answers the question of how fire was made before the invention of matches.  Learn the techniques of flint and steel fire starting.

The Art of Nature - June 2-4, 2017 - $536 per person   

Renowned artist and author Susan Morrison facilitates this art and nature writing workshop.  Combine your observations, art, reflection, prose and poetry to create a naturalist journal.  We’ll begin at ONSC experiencing the beauty of Bear Hollow. Heronswood, Susan’s nature reserve and gallery on the White River will provide the inspiration for another full day of capturing our naturalist thoughts and images.

Eli Vega, Photo Artist:  “CREATING AN ARTISTIC EYE” - October 13-15, 2017 - $315 per person   

This highly interactive and fun workshop takes an artistic approach to photography, based on Eli’s new book, RIGHT BRAIN PHOTOGRAPHY (Be an artist first).  You will learn how to be an artist first with in-camera techniques; see with your imagination, not your eyes; composition; scanning & extracting. As Eli says, “Don’t see with your eyes; see with your imagination.”

Eli Vega is a self-taught, award-winning, and highly published photographer with over twenty-five years of experience.  He is a regular presenter and judge for camera clubs and art groups.
